Yahoo takes on Periscope with video app Livetext

Yahoo has announced its silent video messaging app Livetext is coming to the UK

Yahoo’s silent video messaging app Livetext is launching in the UK, after being quietly rolled out in Hong Kong and Taiwan earlier this month.

Livetext mixes a live two-way silent video stream with text messaging, and is available to download on Android and iOS in the UK, Canada, US, Germany and France from Thursday. The user text and chosen emoji are superimposed over the video stream.

In order to have a LiveText conversation with someone, both users need to have set up Livetext app accounts (group discussions are currently unavailable). Text-only conversations can take place if video streaming is unavailable.

Livetext follows in the footsteps of Twitter’s livestreaming app Periscope, which allows users to broadcast video and write comments to an audience or selected individual – albeit with sound. The new app will be pitched against the enormous popularity of other messaging services WhatsApp and Snapchat.
